1… 2… 3… 4… 5…

Five seconds. That’s the amount of time you have to grab your visitors’ attention on your freelance website. Yep, you read that correctly… Only five seconds!

Studies have proven over and over that most visitors truly are surfing. They are rapidly clicking from one site to another until they find the perfect solution to their problem. With so many sites and so much information available, they make fast decisions to stay on your site or move on to your competition.

If you don’t capture their interest right away, they’ll move on. So, you really have to stand out and grab their attention – quickly. You can evaluate how well your site performs in this way by using the 5 Second Test.

What is the 5 Second Test?

The 5 Second Test is simple. Your goal is to grab your visitors’ attention in the first 5 seconds of their time on your site. If you can capture their attention immediately, they will stay on your site and look more closely at what you have to offer.

Their home page has a simple message that clearly communicates what they have to offer. “Watch TV shows & movies anytime, anywhere.” They also have a very strong call to action – “Start Your Free Month.” That message is the first thing a visitor sees – they’ve passed the 5 Second Test with flying colors!

The great part about this test is that it’s designed as a fun “survey” that only takes 5 seconds which makes it super easy to ask for help! Most people would be willing to give you 5 seconds of their time, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to get a high participation rate.

Depending on the size of your social network, you could easily get 20 or more testers with one simple post. You can also post your test URL in the comments below and let the Freelance Folder community give you feedback.

What to Do with Your Results

Once you have gathered feedback from at least 20 people you will want to analyze the results. We are evaluating two specific things from the feedback you received.

  • First, do you have a clear primary message?
Take a look at your clue app results. If the same words and phrases are used again and again, congratulations. You have a clear, concise message. If not, try to brainstorm a few ways to make your primary message more prominent. You can even reach out to those who responded for advice – pick a few people that you don’t think would mind answering a question or two and see what they think and how your message could be clearer.
  • Secondly, is that primary message enough to grab their attention so they will want to find out more information?
Does the primary message grab their attention? This may be more difficult to determine and will require some further testing. Once you have a clear, concise message, put yourself in the mindset of your target customer and ask “Would this message stop me in my tracks and get me to keep reading more?” If not, you should consider rewriting your primary message so that the answer to the above question is “yes!”
